Hanover Foundations

The grant recipient

Hanover Foundations provides personal development coaching to thousands of 14-16 year olds.

The Hanover Foundations programme

What it aims to do

Many of the pupils that participate in Hanover programmes come from socially deprived areas of London and live with challenging personal circumstances. All of them have pressures that prevent them from achieving the best possible academic and personal performance. Hanover’s coaching programmes shows each client how to break down those barriers and take their own initiative in building exam success as part of their defined future plan.

Hanover Foundations is using SHINE funding to support hundreds of pupils from London secondary schools.

How it works

Hanover trains coaches and places them in schools as part of a paid team. Selected pupils have a series of coaching sessions that focus on:

  • personal strategies – for lessons, projects and exams
  • personal development – in behaviour and demeanour
  • personal motivation – towards realistic, informed career choices and longer term aspirations

Results

Hanover monitor and evaluate progress using questionnaires, Yellis baseline data and GSCE results. These have shown the programme to have impacted on behaviour, attendance at school, GCSEs and attitudes to further education.

Latest results

  • GCSE A*-C grades: more than three fifths gained passes in English Lang. and Lit. 45% gained passes in maths.
  • At least three quarters achieved one grade higher than expected in more than one subject.

The funding

SHINE has made a grant for programme costs. Other funding is provided by corporates, trusts and foundations.

Funding: £229,288 to Hanover Foundations, over six years (2006-2011)

"The difference is that Hanover coaches work with such precision. In the long run the contribution of trained coaches to the education of young people of all abilities cannot be overestimated. Both pupils and teaching staff have noticed an impact: better behaviour, better problem solving skills, being constructively assertive, great self-esteem."

"SHINE's support provides us with a new ability to analyse in depth. Because of their grant we shall be able to learn from and implement even more effective strategies to build on the success of our vital work. Thank you SHINE."

Managing Director, Hanover Foundations

"“Hanover gave me confidence in myself: without it, my grades wouldn't have been as good so I wouldn't have gone to such a good college. You don't realise you're gaining those skills until you look back and think 'where did I learn that?' and you see where it came from. That's how it works; there's an immediate impact but then, later on, you get to see all the other things it's helped."
