Every year, more than 33,000 children leave primary school with substandard maths skills. They are more than twice as likely to persistently truant or be excluded from secondary school, with serious consequences for their future prospects. As ever, children qualifying from free school meals are significantly over-represented in these figures.
SHINE-funded maths projects provide extra support for children who have been identified as struggling in this area. Although they differ in scale and approach, they share a belief that, given some extra time, attention and support, every child can leave primary school confident in their mathematical ability.
