SHINE on Saturday @ Preston Manor CLC

The grant recipient

Preston Manor City Learning Centre is a digital media centre in Wembley, Brent. The majority of Wembley’s population are first generation immigrants and the area has the highest numbers of young people not in education in the borough. The centre has already developed and delivered a number of innovative educational projects and evaluations highlight good attendance, wonderful facilities, the alternative learning environment and specialist professionals.

The programme

SHINE @ Preston Manor CLC is for 60 students in years 6 and 7 (10-12 years old) from three secondaries and eight primaries. The project aims to keep young people excited about and engaged in learning as they transfer between schools. Programme activities are split between two sites giving students access to multimedia facilities and the natural environment.

  • The digital media centre in central Wembley supports students to apply and present their findings through the use of TV, radio and music studios.

  • The Welsh Harp environmental centre leads on field based practical activities and digital microscope work. Students will collect and analyse information here.

The funding

SHINE has made a grant to fund the set up and running costs for a six month pilot.

Funding: £30,000 to Preston Manor CLC, over one year (2008-09)
