SHINE on Saturday @ St Aloysius' College
The grant recipient
St Aloysius’ College is a boy’s secondary comprehensive in Islington. Half the students at the school do not have English as their first language, many are from single parents families, a third receive free schools meals and most students enter the college with attainment below the average expected for their age. Prior to receiving a SHINE grant the school had demonstrated a strong track record in provision of out of school hours programmes and had successfully piloted their own Saturday Academy.
The programme
SHINE @ St Aloysius’ is for 60 students in year 7 (11-12 years old). The project focus is transition and the development of leadership and thinking skills. Core learning takes place through enrichment activities in maths, art and basketball. Workshop days are put on for parents and students and year 6 pupils are invited to take part in the project during the summer term.
Latest results
- 71% of the boys made better than expected progress in numeracy.
- Average attendance is 89%.
The funding
SHINE has made a grant to contribute to the running costs.
